Matter of Concern

Incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and biomass produces emission with suspended particulate matters as part of thick black soot is known as black carbon. This is part of fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) and is a direct cause to climate change.
image

Sources

Utilization of carbon intensive fuels containing high carbon content when subjected to burning produces a thick black soot containing particulate matters. The sources of black carbon are fossil fuels such as natural gas, diesel fuel, coal, and biomass.

Way Forward

Clean energy to replace fossil fuels is ideal to stop the trajectory of black carbon emission. But for now we must improve on what we have and what we use. It is unrealistic to think that a shift to clean energy sources can be fast enough to prevent our glaciers and ice sheets from deteriorating. For NOW, we must find ways to "Burn Fuel Better" as we move towards a clean energy future.

What is black Carbon

Black Carbon

Black carbon is very fine particle of particulate matters usually of particle size less than 2. 5µm. Black carbon emissions are the result of incomplete combustion of fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, biomass, and carbon intensive fuels. Among the particulate matters, black carbon represents 10% of particulate matters.

Black carbon emissions from ships have grown ten times faster in the Arctic compared to the rest of the world, with an 85% increase in black carbon emitted by ships in the Arctic between 2015 and 2019, compared to an 8% increase globally.

Purpose of Black Carbon Coalition

Black Carbon Coalition is the organizer and founder of the “Global Black Carbon Fund®” for the purpose of educating humankind about the devastating effects of Black Carbon and coordinating the development of Worldwide technologies to eliminate it. The coalition will organize industry leaders, organize engineering resources and coordinate and fund companies and industries on every continent to join in the fight to eliminate Black carbon. Every government, every citizen, every business is encouraged to join this coalition as Black carbon is the enemy of our Planet. By joining the Black Carbon Coalition, you will be working to combat climate change and its effects. The coalition will work to educate people about the effects of black carbon and coordinate the development of technologies to eliminate it.

The Manhattan Project of Black Carbon

For those that have never heard of the "Manhattan Project, the Manhattan Project was a research and development undertaking during World War II that produced the first nuclear weapons. It was led by the United States with the support of the United Kingdom and Canada. The project went on during World War II, and was run by the U.S. Army.
The nuclear fission technology perfected by the Manhattan Project engineers has since become the basis for the development of nuclear reactors, for power generators, as well as other innovations, including medical imaging systems (for example, MRI machines) and radiation therapies for various forms of cancer.
This is the type of “focused” effort that will be required to manage, reduce and defeat black carbon. It is essential if we are to have any hope of fighting climate change.
Primary sources

How It's Made

Globally, approximately 8,400 kt of BC were emitted to the atmosphere in 2000. Many of the major sources of BC emissions are produced directly by human activity and BC has a short atmospheric lifetime (days to weeks). Black carbon represents about 10% of PM mass globally. Black carbon deposits originating from factories, cooking and vehicles are compounding the effects of climate change to speed up the melting of the glaciers.

  • Coal and Natural Gas Power Plants
  • Factories and Industries utilizing biomass as fuel
  • Diesel driven engines and vehicles exhaust
  • Kitchen Stoves and Fired Furnaces

Reasons to Eliminate

How It Harms

Black carbon affects the climate by intercepting and absorbing sunlight and darkening snow and ice when deposited. It is most noticeable at the poles, on glaciers and in mountain regions. BC particles can also travel long distances in the atmosphere, and so can also affect public health far from the emission source.

Climate

Apart from GHG emission, black carbon emission are a direct cause of the melting of the glaciers and ice sheets

Black Carbon Effects

This has got to stop!

For us to have any chance at winning the race against climate change.

Educating and Organizing Humanity

Educating the global community on the black carbon and their understanding to control the black carbon emission as the impact of black carbon emission is far greater than carbon dioxide. Awareness session, summits and seminars by black carbon coalition can help the global community, organization to understand their responsibility to conserve the environment and for sustainable development.

Educating and organizing the entire the global community on black carbon and its effects is essential to ensure any reasonable effort to reduce and eliminate it. It MUST be understood that the impact of black carbon emission is far greater than carbon dioxide. Awareness session, summits and seminars by black carbon coalition can help the global community, organize and develop solutions for the elimination of black carbon and provide practical solutions that can be accomplished by the global community.

Burning Fuel Energy

The Fossil Fuel Energy Infrastructure

We live in a fossil fuel energy infrastructure (FFEI), an infrastructure that creates an ocean of energy for our very technological existence. We live in this ocean of energy like fish live in the ocean. IT IS THIS INFRASTRUCTURE THAT CREATES VIRTUALLY ALL OF THE BLACK CARBON.

The fossil fuel energy infrastructure should be distinguished from the fossil fuel industry (FFI). The fossil fuel industry is responsible for feeding the demands of the FFEI, the demands that we as human beings place on the FFEI. And we have legitimate demands.

If you are a human being that lives anywhere other than the jungle, NOTHING that you see exist in nature. NOTHING. Look around where ever you are reading this. From the door knobs, to the table and chairs, to the computers and all the trillion other things around you that you never think twice about. ALL of it is possible because we have power plants and generators that produce electricity for heating or cooling the structures that all of those trillion of items are produced and those structures exist because we are able to mine all of the raw materials (with fossil fuels) that are required to build them.

As long as human beings exist and hopefully continue to advance, we will continue to live in this vast almost endless ocean of energy created by fossil fuel. Perhaps as time goes on, we can replace a portion of this vast ocean of energy with energy produced with clean renewable sources, but if anyone thinks this vast, vast ocean of energy can be replaced in the 50-100 years that we have to prevent our glaciers from melting, is living in a dream world and is fooling themselves (and lots of others).

Our ONLY salvation, is to improve the FFEI while we endeavor to replace it. WE MUST BURN FUEL BETTER.
